Hi, My book *Space Oddities: Women and Outer Space in Popular Film and Culture, 1960-2000* will be out this fall from Continuum Press. Thanks for mentioning the Times Literary Supplement piece.

Aw, that sounds great! I wish I'd had more time to think about female astronauts in pop culture in the light of feminist sci-fi. Most of what I've read (largely from 70s and 80s) uses a future human or alien utopia / dystopia to analyse current world, time and society. I don't recall many stories about female space adventurers, but maybe they're there somewhere. Dissertation topic ahoy!

Ah, the Philip Bond drawings! I love them so...

Our Shine anthology features a (sadly fictional) astronaut twittering(!) about her experiences up there. Story could have worked with male or female but I'm glad the author chose a woman character.

The very idea of a woman in a more masculine profession than many ordinary men was clearly unsettling as journalists went to extraordinary lengths to emphasise the women's femininity. If you're interested you can read this Time magazine article about Jerrie Cobb from 1960 and see what I mean http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,939196,00.html
